How Do You Choose Products?

by Patricia · Lavender Products

Making Choices:

The question how do you choose products should elicit some interesting replies. I know for many of us, surfing the net is now part of our daily activities. And the choices are endless.

Doing My Research:

rose oil natural remedies 300x200 How Do You Choose Products?

I enjoy research, so probably in the minority in that I will read everything I can about a product or service before deciding to buy.

Unless I already know what I am looking for and know what I want to purchase.

Trusting Others Recommendations:

If a trusted blogging buddy or a respected online marketer asks me to check out a product; I usually will.

But spam on the “must have latest gizmo” usually gets deleted without being read!

How Does Your Site Look:

I also often judge the quality of a product by the site it is on. If it is aesthetically pleasing; will probably stay longer than if I go to a poorly displayed site.

After all, I reason if someone can’t be bothered to set up their site professionally; why would they bother with good customer service.

Mountain Rose Herbs:

That’s another reason I was drawn to Mountain Rose Herbs. I read ALL their articles; the history of the company and the ethos of the business.

Unlike some people I have come across on my blogging journey; I do NOT recommend products on this site that I would not use myself.

The products with Mountain Rose Herbs are organic and many are FairTrade.

Which means that when I talk about the importance of using organic products; I have products I can recommend.

Product Reviews Coming:

Though it has been quite some time coming; now I can confidently do product reviews on these available organic products.

And some more good news … there are many products to choose from. Not just lavender products.

Cheap Not Always Cheerful:

For some; the cost is one of the biggest concerns when choosing a product. I do take this into consideration.

However, this also needs to be balanced against the quality of the product. Cheap does not always equal cheerful!

Choosing Organic Products:

Because I have sensitive skin and also seborrheic dermatitis I only use organic products on my skin. And as I want to remain healthy; I also eat a healthy diet.

It is about choices and what we perceive to be important to us.
How do you choose products? For me, choosing quality products is a priority … is it yours?

Thanks Pat for the question.

I do some research into the company through Google and Twitter to listen to the conversation others are having about the company and their product.

After which, I also consider the look of their site. Like most things in life, if you are quality conscious, it will show even on your site. So the site is a good indicator of their commitment to quality and excellence.

Product reviews or testimonials is also useful. But with a little twist, depending on the product and the money involved, I check up on the reviewers also.

One can never be too careful these days especially when shopping online. :)

Hi Tito

I think this question will have some interesting answers. One of the reasons I ask it is because I have just introduced new products on this site.

To me, they are beautiful organic products that I will use myself. Also the company is ethical which is important to me too. And wanted to know what is important to my readers.

Thanks for stopping by Tito and sharing how you choose products. Appreciated.

Dear Patricia.
How lovely to see someone as passionate about lavender as I am. I would like to introduce you to my lavender products. I fell in love with lavender when I started creating my garden down in the South of France where I live and quickly starting created a range of products using it. I now source my lavender from the high altitude of Mont Ventoux.
I would to receive your comments

Hi Celia

Welcome to my small niche lavender blog. Always good to have a fellow lavender lover visiting :-)

I have visited your site. Went over from Twitter to check it out. The products look lovely.

I was really pleased when I did finally source products in the US cos I already had local organic productson offer.

However, the postage was too high for most of my American readers to contemplate purchasing.

I’m hoping with these products they will now have the products they have asked about.

All the best with your biz venture too Celia. Hope it goes well for you.

BTW if you are going to become active commenting on blogs, go across and get a gravitar cos lots of sites won’t approve comments without them.

Interesting question Patricia!

I for one would choose products when I hear something good being said about it or if I read a good review about it. Of course, if some close friend or relative is using it- it needs to be brought. Other than that I wonder how else one can really make out.

I do like your review about mountain rose herbs seems interesting, though I wonder if we would ever get it at our end.

Thanks for sharing :)

Hi Harleena

Thanks for your input. I am very interested to hear how others choose products. Thought I would share how I do and hopefully get a conversation going so I find out what customers are looking for.

The products are really beautiful. Have friends who checked them out on my recommendation. Now to spread the word more and let others know about them.

Hmmm, I’m not a good shopper; I’m a snatch and grab guy without giving it much thought. If I am going to buy something I usually have a pretty good idea and if there are choices, I usually will choose between the first couple that catch my eye. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t………:).

Hi Bill

I think a lot of guys are like you … shopping not being their favourite pastime lol

I love doing the research and as I say in this post, finding Mountain Rose Herbs was such a great find for me, my readers and both my sites :-)

Thanks for stopping by and as always, adding to the conversation. Appreciated.

I’m not so perspicacious when it comes to selecting products all the time. I go by two things; one, what I’ve used and two, what looks cool. Price is sometimes a consideration but not all that often, as I feel if it’s good then people might pay for it.

Of course, these days I market things more often that I created; that changes the topic drastically. ;-)

Hi Mitch

Thanks for stopping by. Guys often don’t take the time us gals do with some of these products I mention.

However, I have noted that with the “boys toys” ie any sort of gadget; they may do more research and talk about it more lol

I’m enjoying the feedback as it lets me know how people do go about choosing their products. We are all so different eh :-)

Hi Victoria

Thanks for visiting my small niche lavender blog and staying to comment. Landing on the Mountain Rose Herbs site was such a great find for me. Both for this blog and for my newly launched http://www.psorisasis-information.com site.

The quality of the products plus the great variety, should cater for the most discerning shopper who happens to visit here.

I plan to do product reviews on the different types of products as I have those who visit who are into natural health, others who use lavender in their cooking and a myriad other reasons for being a part of this community.

Looking forward to all 2012 has for my blog and my business. Hope it’s a good year for you too Victoria.

And a great endorsement for the products; as one who already uses them. Thanks

Hi Patricia,

Mountain Herbs is a very reputable company. I know many people who order from and recommend them. It’s good to know that you recommend them too.

I always read reviews before I decide to purchase a product. Like you, I never recommend a product unless I have tried it. That’s the best way to be.

I like what you say about “cheap not always cheerful.” That’s true. There are a few personal items that I love to use that, when I read reviews the main thing reviewers complain about is the price. The price of the product is alright with me, because it works and never lets me down.

Thanks for sharing your list. I’m glad you’re back!

Take care,

Evelyn P.

Hi Evelyn

It’s good to be back. And what a great find … Mountain Rose Herbs. Really pleased to be able to recommend such beautiful products.

And these are all reasonably priced too. Which should keep everyone happy.

Thanks for stopping by and staying to join the conversation Evelyn. Like you, if a product works then I will continue to purchase it.

I usually choose products based on its popularity among my friends. For example: If I were to buy a new theme frame work for my blog, I would consider the best options (by checking out other bloggers and see what they are using; check if they have any reviews related to the theme and then choose the best framework – from the best few – based on price, features and flexibility).

Same thing happens in the real world. I usually ask my friends or do some research online and then buy it (I don’t usually buy that many stuff anyways, so If I do buy something, I usually do some research).

Thanks for asking, Patricia!

Hi Jeevan

Thanks for stopping by. I also listen to my friends (if they are qualified to comment lol) and also do research, especially if I am buying a big item!

Sounds like you do the same. And as far as skin products, I have to be especially vigilant with my seborrheic dermatitis.

Have to make sure all the products I apply to my skin are organic and don’t contain harmful chemicals. That’s why I was so pleased when I found Mountain Rose Herbs. They are products I will be able to recommend and use myself. Win-win for me :-)

No problem Patricia!

Nowadays, it is becoming really hard to find “good” products. Every single thing has some kind of bad chemical that has a really bad effect on our body. So, the best thing to do is choose the product that has more benefits and less harm (which is becoming very hard to find).

Thanks for the reply, Patricia!

That’s why I was so pleased to find these products. They are organic and many are Fair Trade; which means the workers are NOT exploited.

Hoping that many who visit here, will go find out about these beautiful products for themselves.

Will do some product reviews to let people know the many and varied products available.

Hey Patricia,

I am so glad you did this post. I never research before choosing my products. I am more dependent on someone’s recommendation. If I like what I see, I get it!

I need to open my eyes widely! :)

Hi Hajra

Thanks for stopping by and joining the conversation. It is interesting to hear everyones way of choosing products.

Can confidently recommend Mountain Rose Herbs to you :-) They are beautiful products and I love that they are also an ethical company too.

So if you are looking for a gift or even products for yourself, you will know where to come.

One of the reasons I research products is cos I have seborrheic dermatitis and need to only use organic products on my skin.

Also because I have researched plenty; am very aware of some of the harmful chemicals in a lot of products that are out there!

Don’t want these chemical either on my skin or absorbed into my body either. So I choose organics and happy with my choices.

Hello Patricia, well from my point of view while choosing for any product I find myself much like a critic. I don’t believe in Testimonials (unless the manufacturer is small one), the reason for not believing the testimonials is the real cases of Paid reviews and testimonials. therefore I get myself towards the manufacturer’s social networks and third part sites. Although this process may lead to biased way of thinking about any products but most of the times, it always gives right way of choosing the right products! Thanks for the post! Would love to hear from you regarding my way of selection of any product!

Patricia@lavenderuses.com January 16, 2012 at 5:52 pm

Hi Adrian

You make some relevant comments here. With all the scams and hype that can be found on the internet; it is easy to become cynical!

That is one reason it took me so long to find products and a company I wanted to do business with. When I visited some sites to find products; I knew that they were not products I would use myself or recommend to my readers.

If I know the site; I may take notice of testimonials. And I don’t do paid reviews, so when you read product reviews here, they will be honest reviews written by me.

Because I have a nursing background and also have seborrheic dermatitis; I understand the importance of the contents of products applied to the skin or taken orally.

Thanks for taking the time to visit and join the conversation Adrian.

Hello Patricia,

The smell of lavender gives me comfort and reminds me of my Grandma who used cremes and lotions with lavender scent. Reading your blog and your passion for lavender brings back my memories of her and make me smile.
When I do a product research I read negative reviews first before I read the positive replies. I some cases I actually bought a product online based on the neg. review and was very happy with it.

I’m looking forward to check out Mountain Rose Herbs further. I already spotted something that brought my attention.

Thanks!

Welcome to my lavender blog. In my “About Me” I talk about my Grandmother and her love of lavender too.

She introducted me to the lovely lavender and it has been a firm favourite ever since.

When you check out the Mountain Rose Herbs products, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

I am very happy to have found them and be able to offer the many and varied products to my readers.

Have a great week Anje and enjoy looking around their site. Thanks for stopping by and staying to comment. Appreciated.

For me it depends on the product. If it’s something like a TV and it’s going to set me back a bit I normally go for a well known brand and then research the best price.

If it’s a plugin that I’m wanting to purchase I’ll research the product trying to find a blogger who uses and recommends it that I trust and whenever possible I’ll buy it from them.

Hi Sire

Thanks for stopping by and joining the conversation. Finding those we trust and doing research on products seems to be a recurring choice for many of us.

If its anything electrical like a TV or even a new laptop, my brother is my go-to person as he is an electronic engineer so knows way more than me about these things.

Hope your week has started well. I’m doing catchup after a welcome break down south. Was lovely to wake up and look out on the ocean and just relax for a few days.

And with the temperature rising, it’s hard now to get down to work and not think about those still enjoying an extended break and cooling off at the beach.

Well, I was hoping to get some blogging action done today but I got called in to work and so I’ll have to leave that to later. As it happens I got told off because we’re getting audited and I got caught out doing the wrong thing, taking two cages out when I should be doing one. :D

Hi Patricia,
I completely agree. The more attractive the website the better. Price is sometimes a consideration but not always. Once I find a product that I truly love (quality, consistency, price, etc.) I am more than happy to recommend it to everyone.

Patricia@lavenderuses.com January 27, 2012 at 10:12 am

Hi Ann

For me, the presentation and the look and feel of a site does influence how long I stay there. However, good information also captures my attention.

My father always taught me “to buy cheap is to buy twice” and for many products that is true. I don’t usually go for a cheaper option as ofter it is also inferior quality … unless it is a sale price and then it’s a bargain:-)

With my seborrheic dermatitis, I always choose organic skin products and now that I have found Mountain Rose Herbs, I don’t have to look any further for my supply.
