Lavender for Athletes Foot

by Patricia · Lavender Health

The Saga of Athletes Foot

When I heard about lavender for athletes foot I was most interested. When you hear my story about this fungal condition, you will understand why.

Have you ever had Athlete’s foot?  I don’t mean can you run marathons nor do a sprint in record time!

Fotolia 21378758 XS 300x200 Lavender for Athletes Foot

Athlete’s foot is an irritating and very itchy fungal infection.

Whether you are obsessed (like me) with drying my feet and wearing flip flops (thongs to us Aussies) in communal showers at the local swimming pool, alas it can still happen to the best of us!

Misdiagnosis

Yikes, when I got a nail infection it was misdiagnosed for years.  Even though I was working in a hospital at the time, both the local doctor and the podiatrist didn’t treat the infection properly.  So for years I had a sore big toe and hardening nail bed.

This is not a good look in summer.  Just as well I was living in the UK at the time.  Unlike here in Perth where summer goes on and on; in the UK sunny days are few and far between.  So I didn’t need to wear sandals.  Consequently my sore and infected toe was hidden from the masses for years.

Treated But Still a Sore Toe

Eventually a GP was brave (or foolish) enough to put me on a course of very potent antifungal medication that seemed to clear it up.  The sore toe remained and only years later that got sorted!

Trials With The Lovely Lavender

Why I am telling you all this?  Not a very pleasant tale to regale is it?!  Well…..I have just read about an amazing discovery that could be the answer to combat Athlete’s foot and fungal infections in general.

Read on and I’ll share what I have discovered as I research the lovely lavender’s many uses.  In Portugal a study has been conducted.

In the Journal of Medical Microbiology it has been reported that lavender oil could be used for the treatment of resistant anti-fungal infections.  The Portuguese study at the University of Coimbra was conducted by researchers.  They trialled lavender oil from the Lavendula Viridis plant.

Lavandula Viridis

This species of lavender is native to southern Portugal.  It is distinctive for its yellow flowers and rabbit-ear bracts.  It looks similar in appearance to Lavandula stoechas.  I will be exploring this species at a later date as it looks interesting.  Even more so after this research finding.

Have Traditional Treatments Run Their Course?

Coming from a nursing background, I can appreciate what this study will mean in the treatment of fungal infections.  Many traditional treatments either don’t work or are very potent.

Not much of a choice really.  And even when an infection appears to have cleared up, it may lay dormant and re-occur at a later date!

Promising Results So Far…

I am keen to follow this up as I have  other research on the go at the moment and will be interested to see if this goes further with other conditions that need treating.

For the moment, the study states that it was effective against various strains of candida (commonly known as thrush).  It proved to be lethal against fungal infections involving skin, nails and hair.

Effective Against Athlete’s Foot

It was also effective against fungal infections that cause Athlete’s foot and ringworm. The component of the lavender essential oil damaged cell membrane which resulted in destroying the fungal cells. So you probably now are realising the impact this study could have on treating all these conditions with natural products.

Informed Choices

Can you see why I am so excited?  Lavender for athletes foot appears to be effective. Just to know there are more and more studies done into the effects of its many uses means many things here on this blog.

Firstly, it means I will be able to bring you more helpful information. This in turn will mean you eventually have more informed choices about the products and treatments to use.

And it’s not just the Lavender Lady who is excited by all these findings.  Both Professor Ligia Salgueiro and Professor Eugenia Pinto who conducted these studies, agree that there are side-effects with many drugs used to treat fungal infections and many infections are now drug resistant.

Lavender Oils

Lavender oils have very few side-effects and are proving through this study that it may be an effective alternative treatment.  It will be interesting to see the results when clinical trials are undertaken.  I will definitely be following this closely to see how this unfolds.

Alternative Treatments Sought

Another important factor in the need to find alternative treatments; has been the growing concern of the higher incidence of fungal infections being reported.

Some of this is due to immuno-compromised patients such as those who have had organ transplants, are being treated for cancer, HIV/Aids.  So an effective treatment has been needed for some time.

Lavender Coming Up Smelling Sweet … again

Throughout the ages, lavender has been used medicinally.  This is just more confirmation that this amazing aromatic herb has many uses.  Lavender for Athletes foot. Seems to me that lavender seems to be coming up smelling sweet again.  Unlike Athlete’s foot!

I can not believe lavender has so many uses, seriously, you are making me love that vegetable (kiddin’).

Anyway, I want to say that I am so happy I never picked up athlete’s foot and I can also say I am so surprised I haven’t. Not only wearing military boots for more than 24hrs at a time, but taking showers where ever you can while out in the field. I guess I’ve been really lucky.

I know it is really annoying and the worst thing with those fungus (or any fungus for that matter) is that they take so long to treat.

This was a really interesting medical update :) I like how I don’t need to read any news, all I do is come here and go to Elise’s blog.

Thanks Patricia and I am also glad you finally got to post something, I know how you love this blog :)

Hi Brankica

You are so right, it takes ages to get rid of, so this study hopefully will prove to be a boost for conducting clinical trials.

Ironically, mine was caught helping out my nursing staff with showering patients! The shower recesses are a great breeding ground for fungal infections….wet and staying damp for long periods. Also used by many people over time! That good deed sure had long-term effects ;-)

The spores are so tiny that even with some protective footware, so easy to catch. Was relieved once it was sorted but as I said in the post, it was a long time before I was given the correct treatment.

Weird that it was just in a couple of nail beds but the rest okay. Usually it is on the soles of feet or between toes. After reading the research, understand a heap more now.

Have a lot more information of the lovely lavender and its many uses, so in time will be sharing this with my readers. Also, will be putting more in my e-book too. Stay tuned :-)

Thanks for stopping by Brankica. Always enjoy your input.

Hi William

Thanks for stopping by and staying to comment. It’s great news for sufferers of any fungal infections eh??!! :-) Would have saved me a lot of grief if these studies had been carried out years ago.

The lovely lavender sure comes up smelling sweet again. I really enjoy doing the research and as I have only been looking into natural health products for a few years, still heaps to learn.

Gives more choice as more clinical trials are done. Although natural products have been used for thousands of years, now there is scientific studies being done to back up what many have known for years.

Hi Patricia,

Extensive info on the beloved lavender and quite exciting indeed. I’m a big fan of natural remedies as you may remember. The study is most exciting and the news comes at a perfect time for me.

My dad, who is 82 and lives with us, has a toe nail fungus right now. His mobility has greatly deteriorated and this just adds to that condition. We just recently bought a topical liquid to try but have yet to apply it. I am always fearful of using over the counter creams for myself as I am so fair skinned. I have the same concern for him not only because of his fair skin but also the medications he takes. Adverse reactions can be quite scary, especially for seniors. I feel safer applying a natural oil compared to an OTC chemical concoction any day. Perhaps I’ll search for a lavender oil and give it a try!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Hi Kathy

The more I read about natural therapies, the more I embrace them. I was always hesitant to put chemicals in my body; even from a young age.

Coming from a nursing background, I remember having to learn all the side effects and contra-indications for the drugs that were used in a hospital setting.

When I started researching the lovely lavender I realised how many uses there must be for it. I am constantly amazed, the more I read and research.

The wonderful thing about this amazing aromatic herb is that if you buy organic lavender essential oil (I only use English lavender) you know it is free from chemicals and pesticides.

Let me know if you do give it a try and the results. Have had some great testimonials from my satisfied customers with the sourced lavender products I sell :-)

Thanks for stopping by and brining your input to the conversation Kathy. Appreciated.

Hi Patricia:

You have a wonderful post here. I do love reading and watching these home remedies that really work. And so your post was more magnetic to read.

Every natural thing has so many uses for better health, but we all at times go to poping pills, and drinking liquid from the doctor.

The good thing about Lavender is that its fragrance is so soothing that it feels good using it.

Make it a great day for yourself

Hi Fran

Thanks for stopping by. I am very pleased with all the studies being done and clinical trials happening. Brings more validity to natural health uses :-)

Lavender does have a beautiful perfume doesn’t it. Especially English lavender which is what all my sourced products contain.

Some lavandins do not have that same perfume. I did a post on that topic some time ago, so my regular readers will know what to choose when looking to purchase lavender products.

Thanks for your input Fran. Hope your blog and business are doing well too.

Hi Pat,

I definitely don’t know Lavender is such a wonderful plant. All guys in Singapore have to go through military service, those were the days when we have to wear the military boots for two years.

Especially it is such a hot country here. It just make those infections come easily. Is the treatment done by soaking our foot using Lavender oil?

Great to read your new post here. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

If you want the recipe for the foot soaking and also the lotion to use for fungal infections then email me and I will send it to you. Definitely worth a try as it is known for its antifungal properties.

I enjoy researching all these natural health posts and if you ever have any specific questions, I’m happy to answer them for you.

Definitely being in the military in a hot humid climate it is easy to see why these fungal infections are prevalent and spreading!

Thanks for stopping by Lye. Appreciate your continued support.

Hi Patricia, I saw in your reply to another comment that you have a store on Amazon. Do you sell through Amazon in the US or just Australia? If so, could you provide a link to the store in the US? And to the store in Australia? I’m a big fan of lavender. :-)

Reply

Patricia@lavender oil March 19, 2011 at 10:05 am

Hi Carolyn

It’s the US store and if you go to the top of this page you will see a tag marked Lavender Products. Click on there and it will show you some of the lavender products :-) It then goes to the Amazon store. A techie friend set it up for me and that’s how I get there ;-)

What I found with my Etsy store that although the store is based in US, my products are local so for some people they baulked at the postage!

Different mindset to us Aussies who if we want a product will pay for it plus postage as that is what we are used to. In the US with many more people and heaps of competition, things seem to be much cheaper.

That said, if someone wants a product enough they order it. And I know all those who have so far have been happy customers cos I’ve had emails alluding to the fact. Hope that helps.

Wow, I had no idea lavender was so useful. I just thought it was a nice smelling plant people use in soap :)

I also didn’t think that I’d spend this much time reading about it, but you caught my attention. Well done!

And by the way…I always wear flip flops in public showers too. Freaks me out to know that so many feet have walked through there. I don’t know what it is about showers…I have no problem walking barefoot outside in the park, but showers seem grimy.

Hi Eugene

Thanks for stopping by and staying to comment. Glad to enlighten you about the lovely lavender ;-)

When I was nursing I did a lot of medical research. Really enjoy researching and finding even more to write about the many uses of this amazing aromatic herb.

However, I realise I am not giving a research presentation, so try to make my posts interesting and relevant for my readers. Glad I caught your attention.

Ironically, I caught athlete’s foot in a hospital and it was towards the end of my time nursing. Had managed to avoid it for years lol Then when I was in a senior position and just doing my staff a favour, it happened!!!

Very sensible practice to wear flipflops in public showers. That’s one of the easiest places to pick up a fungal infection.

Wondered about this topic but there has been a reasonable amout of traffic come check out the post already and it’s not quite 24 hours since I published.

So even if people are not commenting or asking questions, they are getting some information and hopefully finding it useful. I figure if I let my readers know about these findings, we can all make better informed choices when choosing products to use.

Hi Melinda

Must say I was pleased with the title. I don’t usually manage anything like that ;-)

A lot of the pharmacopia antifungal medication just isn’t working anymore. I think that is what motivated the medical researchers to start looking at natural products.

Now that more and more studies are being done, it can only be a positive result for natural health. Now those who use them won’t have said to them “well it’s only anecdotal with no concrete evidence”.

Thanks for stopping by Melinda. Always good to see you here.

Sore big toes with hardening nail beds are NOT a good luck for summer: check! :)

It’s disheartening how little we know about the healing power of the natural world around us. The evangelists for natural health can’t seem to beat out Big Pharma in terms of spreading their message and, sadly, convincing the masses. We do more harm to ourselves than good with most medications available today.

I learn something new about Lavender today AND I do have someone in mind that could use this very information. So thank you for the information, Patricia!

And I’m pleased to say it is organic English lavender which is the one used most often in aromatherapy in the research I have done.

Was interesting to read about this other type of lavander used for this study too. They used a local lavender and I’ll be interested to see if they do clinical trials and if they do, what the results will be.

Besides, nothing better than a good smelling solution.

Unfortunatley, in hot moist environments Athlete’s foot is not so “niche” lol It is all too common and very difficult to get rid of….till now ;-)

And yes, there is the added bonus that this is an amazing aromatic herb too. The perfume of the English lavender is both relaxing and so nice which makes it definitely a winner in my book.

Hi Peggy

The more I research the lovely lavender, the more I am amazed at its many uses. And the great thing is it has minimal side-effects unlike so many treatments that contain harmful chemicals!

As for warts: there are several natural remedies that are recommended, ranging from tea tree oil applied twice a day, lemon juice applied twice a day and aloe vera cream to name a few,

With warts, because they are a viral infection, should eventually clear up. Sounds like your friend may have a suppressed immune system so taking garlic capsules can help boost immune system too.

Hope that helps Peggy. Have done quite a bit of research on natural health since I started this blog, so always pleased to answer any questions I can.

Hi Patricia,
Athlete’s foot yuk!
While I have been fortunate not to have contracted it…my son when he was younger had it and it was a pain to try and get rid of….
Nothing seem to work… where were you when we need you:-)

Natural cures are gaining the notoriety it deserves.
Where ever possible I will look for a natural treatment before I get into the drugs…. and glad to say it has been awhile since I have to.

Great info … keep up the great work.
You prove that small niches can work well.

Cheers
Bryan

Hi Bryan

It isn’t too pleasant lol But the good news is there is now some effective natural treatments that are being recognised :-)

I would have loved to have known about natural therapies back when I had such a long-term nailbed infection!!! Still, good to be able to give some healthy options to others now.

Thanks for stopping by Bryan. Appreciate your input.

I could definitely use it then! I have had an on-off fungus on one toe and the md told me ” it will go away, maybe, in 2 years”. I am gonna get me some lavender oil instead!

Interesting information, Patricia.

Nail infections are so difficult to get rid of, they advertise dangerous, Liver-damaging drugs on TV.

The Lovely Lavender sounds much better.

Let Nature take care of Nature :-)

Hi Rick

Mine certainly took ages to get rid of. Would have helped if it had been diagnosed and treated correctly in the first place!

And I didn’t know about the lovely lavender then either. Now even the medical profession are researching the benefits of natural health products and lavender is coming up smelling sweet :-)

Thanks for stopping by. I just re-read your SEO post and RT it. Excellent article Rick and one I will suggest my newbie blogging friends read too.

Hi Marcus

Always good to have you visiting. I’d be really happy if all the schools in the US with football teams clicked onto my Amazon store and ordered their lavender oil from me LOL

Glad you learnt something from the post. It’s interesting that this post comes straight after my “Comments don’t equal sales” post.

Less comments this post to the ponderings on blogging posts. But more sales :-)

Planning to do more posts on health related problems and natural health with lavender. Heaps of research being done that validates natural health remedies so I’m sure people will be interested in the findings too.

Thanks for joining the conversation Marcus. Appreciate your input.

Hi Patricia,

I had no idea you could use Lavender to treat athlete’s foot! :) It’s amazing what you can do with natural products and I think we all overlook it so much because companies tell use otherwise so they can make their money.

I don’t think I ever had athlete’s foot but I definitely had all sorts of stuff happen with my feet since I used to be a lifeguard and a swimming instructor, so walking around in bare feet at the pool and in the changing rooms was definitely not always so sanitary! lol.

I remember getting a lot of plantar warts from it. Ew! Haha.

I know a lot of people who don’t believe so much in natural products for healing, my father for one works for a big pharmaceutical company so he doesn’t so much believe in natural remedies, I don’t think.

But I do! I’d rather use lavender to cure something rather than spend my money on something that might give me harsh side effects and may not even work as well.

Very fascinating post, Patricia! I learned something new. :)

Hi Elise

Wow, a lifeguard. You must be a very strong swimmer. Our lifeguards are really well respected here. Especially with our outdoor way of life and our long summers. Lots of people spend heaps of time swimming at our beautiful Perth beaches.

And the lifeguards are kept busy with their rescues; especially when tourists don’t realise how powerful the ocean can be!

Natural products are becoming more popular here in Oz. Especially as pharmacopia have known side-effects and are very costly! And more people embracing a healthy lifestyle, free from harmful chemicals.

With all the medical research and controlled studies done by medicos and researchers; there is now plenty of evidence that natural products work :-) And there are so few side effects.

As always, great to see you amongst the lovely lavenders Elise. Thanks for stopping by and joining the conversation.

Patricia, aloha. So enjoyed reading your article. Lavender with its many uses never ceases to amaze me.

For years I had a business custom formulating blends for various resorts, spas and clinics. It seemed no matter what I was making, I always added a bit of lavender whether to enhance it efficacy or its aroma.

To me, lavender oil is the Swiss Army Knife of essential oils. To be truthful, I never leave home without a small bottle of it and each room in my home has a bottle in it as well.

Patricia, thx so much for sharing this research. Aloha. Janet

I’m constantly amazed when I read all the research being done and the many uses for the lovely lavender. Will be posting again soon with more information about it.

Thanks for joining the conversation and bringing your input to the post. Much appreciated Janet.

I found our site by an accident, surfing somewhere else, found your comment and was curious about your lavender website. What a great information, not just on the good smelling pretty flower, but on business and many other things. I’ve been really enjoying reading around. I love lavender and have a little bags everywhere, in my bed, my closets, bags… I am a tennis fitness coach, and reading about the athletes foot and lavender was cool. I can prevent it before it even happens. Thank you again for your great posts.

Patricia,

I have used lavender oil in my bath water but I did not know it helped with infections and fungus.

A sweet selling alternative to the standard medications actually sounds good. We will be giving it a try, I have a couple men in the house and they love the smell of lavender. I think it has a very soothing scent.

Hi Sheila

Good to have you stopping by. Lavender does have a soothing scent and one of its many uses is to help with relaxation.

Have some more research-based posts coming up that hopefully will inform the readers of this blog of more uses of the lovely lavender too.

Hi Patricia,

You have a lot in common with my wife, who also has a nursing background and now prefers natural health solutions.

She’ll be so excited when I tell her about this post!

Thanks for working so hard to find solutions to everyday problems Patricia, and great post!

Hi Jason

Thanks for your kind words about my post. I enjoy researching natural health and it constantly surprises me all the studies now being done into their efficacy and their many uses. The lovely lavender definitely comes up smelling sweet :-)

I have done a few lavender health posts your wife may find interesting. Especially as she has a nursing background.

There will be more natural health posts coming up. A lot of people are saying this is new information for them and they are finding them helpful.

Eventually there will also be some included in an e-book I am at the moment putting together; along with other lavender related topics.

Hi Patricia,

Hate to admit it publicly but a few years ago I developed Athlete’s Foot after a ski holiday – too many spas I think.
It was just a continual dry flaky skin. My podiatrist offered me the choice between antibiotics (fast) or Tea Tree oil (slow). Of course I chose the oil. It took a few weeks but it cleared it up completely.
The downside is that it has a strong smell – lavender oil would be a much better option. I have no doubt it will work as it’s such a great antiseptic. So it’ll be lavender oil from now on.
Thanks for the research.

Hi Julia

I was always so careful and didn’t figure on catching it at work! As it was under the nail it was not only not properly treated for years, it took ages to get rid of.

Didn’t know anything about natural health products then. My podiatrist suggested tea tree oil to treat an infection some time ago and it seemed to work but I agree lavender smells so much better.

Fungal infections are so contagious and with medical studies into the efficacy of natural products increasing, it bodes well for more controlled studies into the many uses of the lovely lavender….sweet :-)

Hey Patricia,

Wow, looks like you find another potentially interesting use for lavender. I’ve known that lavender has good potential for healthcare but I think a lot of people don’t realize that. I myself run quite a bit and having lavender oil to soothe those dry cracked heels is a great idea!

Thanks for stopping by and joining the conversation. It is amazing how many uses there are for the lovely lavender.

Makes my research all the more interesting and it’s great to be able to share the findings with all my readers.

Have just done another post on yet another recent medical research project which looks at insomnia and the findings.

Pleased to report the lovely lavender comes up smelling sweet….again ;-)

I’m not at all surprised Patricia. Before modern medicine people used to use herbs and such to cure many types of illnesses. What surprises me is that it’s taking us so long to rediscover it.

Reply

Patricia@lavender oil April 13, 2011 at 9:33 am

Hi Sire

That’s right. Thousands of years ago they were using herbs for medicinal purposes. And the life span was greater than it is today!

I like the fact that there are much fewer side-effects with natural products. And I know what I am putting on and in my body when I use them. With pharmacopia and non-organic products, I don’t know what effects they may have!

It’s great that now the medical researchers are doing controlled studies of many of the natural therapies and the findings have been really great.

Have lots more to share about studies being done or having been completed; showing yet again the many and varied uses of the lovely lavender. And of course there will be a natural health section in my ebook too :-)

Thanks for stopping by Sire. Always good to see you over here amongst the lavender bushes. Keeps us all smelling sweet eh ;-)

Lol Patricia,

Funny sounding post haha. I haven’t smelled the foot of someone with “Athletes Foot” but I suspect it sure doesn’t smell better than someone who has bad smelling socks with health feet :D I know lavender has many uses but I never knew it can be used for athletes foot as well. My bro who is runs competitively seems to have always get that problem.

Time to get him lavender oil!

Hi Angelica

Yes indeed the lovely lavender does have many healing properties. And one of them is as an anti-fungicidal.

A friend of mine, on reading this post, bought some organic English lavender oil and started using it immediately. She couldn’t wait to tell me how effective it had been in clearing up her athlete’s foot.

With all the medical trials now being conducted into the healing properties of this amazing aromatic herb, at last it is being recognised for it’s many uses.

Thanks for stopping by Angelica and for adding your input. Appreciated.
