Lavender Oil Acne Treatment

by Patricia · Lavender Health

In a Spot of Bother … Lavender Could Be The Answer

Lavender oil acne treatment is another of the effective lavender uses I have researched. And as acne is a skin condition that can cause both embarrassment and distress; good news indeed.

Natural Health Products to the Fore

Over recent years natural health products have come to the fore.

Only anecdotal evidence was once offered for the successful treatments of various conditions. Now clinical trials are being undertaken at a regular rate.

No Longer Anecdotal

This can only be good news for many who have chosen to use these natural health products. In many of these clinical trials the lovely lavender has come out smelling sweet.

Lavender oil in acne treatment is no exception.

Clinical Trials Confirm Healing Properties

It has shown that not only does lavender have healing properties but what some of those healing properties are.  Anti-bacterial and anti-fungicidal properties have been identified following clinical trials. Also antihistamine and antiseptic properties have been noted and recorded.

Choose Organic Lavender

As in previous posts I have pointed out how important it is to choose organic lavender when using it for medicinal purposes.  Some products on the market are not English lavender or French lavender.  These are both the lavenders of choice in many organic lavender products.

Lavandins & Synthetic Lavenders

Lavandins which are hybrid lavenders are higher in camphor content and therefore may cause a reaction when applied to sensitive skin.  There have been recorded cases of lavandins causing burns to the skin.  Also, some synthetic lavender products contain harmful chemicals.

The skin is semi-permeable;  therefore  when a product is either rubbed into the skin or directly applied to it; there will be absorption into the skin and this will in turn enter the bloodstream.

If the product is not organic and chemical free, then those chemicals present with synthetic products will also be absorbed.

You Get What You Pay For

Yes these products will probably cost less to purchase, but will not have the same health properties  as organic English lavender and also there will be more risks of side-effects.

Lavender Healing Properties

In some cases lavender essential oil has been effective in lessening scars in acne patients.  This is not a surprise to me.  Having researched lavender extensively I noted that a French aromatherapist  Rene Gattefosse experienced exactly the same healing properties, following an accident.

Amazing Results Recorded

Having  sustained burns  whilst  working in his laboratory; he quickly poured lavender oil on the affected  area.  Not only did the burn heal quickly; it was also free from infection.  And it left no scarring!

Challenges

Having nursed burns patients, I can concur that this is one of the issues a person needs to deal with when the wounds are healed. Scarring remains one of the biggest challenges in their treatment.

So too with acne.  Often there is extensive scarring and to be able to have lavender oil acne treatment available that not only assists with healing; that may also aid with scar tissue is an added bonus.

It makes you wonder doesn’t it Patricia why people opt for the cheaper product when it doesn’t have the same benefits? They may as well throw their money in the bin.

It seems that the lavender oil has the same healing effect as pure aloe vera. I wonder if there would be any benefit in combining them?

Patricia@lavenderuses.com June 29, 2011 at 11:07 am

Hi Sire

I think sometimes people don’t really know the difference! When I did the post on lavenders v lavandins under the heading “Cheap But Not So Cheerful” awhile back it was interesting to read the responses.

Most people were completely unaware there was any difference! And I remember getting emails questioning products people were using. Some had thought they were using organics when they weren’t. Packaging can at times be misleading imo.

And yes I have read where lavender essential oil is combined with aloe vera for some skin treatments. Aloe vera is wonderful too isn’t it for its healing properties.

I will be researching this more when my new site goes up. As it is a health site that deals with skin conditions, I want to explore the effectiveness of different natural therapies alongside the traditional pharmacopia that is prescribed for some of the severe and chronic skin conditions people have.

Hope things are going well for you Sire. I’m excited about launching my new site. Getting close as just uploading the pages after my friend Brankica did my logo for me.

I’m sure your new site will be just as big a hit as this one Patricia.

You are so right about how the labelling of a product can fool people into believing it’s something that it’s not. Labelling laws in Australia suck. You can buy something thinking it’s an Aussie product when in reality it isn’t. They should really do something about that.

I sure hope it is more profitable LOL I have learnt heaps having this blog but I am trying a different biz plan with my new site.

Will let my readers know once it is up. Just uploaded the home page and Brankica taught me some html code. Was so happy I got it right and so I feel I am now on my way.

Have sourced some great graphics too so all in all it is progressing … slowly.

I think we are stricter than some countries as far as labelling organic products. But I know what you mean with other things!

It doesn’t surprise me in the least either to learn that lavender assists with scars. Lavender is one that you know I have used over the years. I would venture to say it played a big part in actually curing my migraines. I suffered for too many years prior to using lavender to think otherwise.

Many plants have amazing healing properties. Sire mentioned Aloe. It flourishes here in Florida and we used it often having two boys.

I prefer natural cures over pharmaceutics especially after seeing the adverse affects medications can have.

Have a great week Patricia.

Hi Kathy

I know you are one of the lavender lovers that visits often. So you are well up with the lovely lavenders many uses. And I have read other reports where people have said that lavender has helped in curing their migraines.

I agree about aloe vera and its wonderful healing properties. In fact there are people here in Oz who are developing products with this plant and it seems to be growing in popularity too.

And I’m with you on natural products. Try to always use them and steer clear of pharmaceuticals as much as possible!

Now with the increased number of clinical trials happening that affirm what has been known for thousands of years; they are really becoming the first choice of treatment for an ever-increasing number of people.

Have a wonderful week Kathy and thanks for stopping by. Appreciated.

Hi Patricia:

What a technical blog post this is? Full of Botanical terms. From Antibactrial to Antifungicidal and a lot more. But since it is to do with Lavender, originally known to general people as a classy fragrance, it is easy to understand.

Patricia, you did a great job by reminding people about the synthetic Lavender. This is good and it will help those who buy to use it for so many other uses of it.

I simply know Lavender essential oil, as it is this product used in many products from bath and body to spa, handsoap and aromatherapy.

Very informative and still interesting post Patricia.

I bet it will add some new buyers to your business portfolio.

Good luck to you.

Hi Fran

Thanks for the kind words about the post. More medical than technical lol

As I have quite a few new lavender lovers visiting my blog since I wrote the post about different types of lavender and why it is important to choose the correct one; thought it would be good to include it in this post.

It is surprising how many people think they are buying healthy products but on closer inspection often there are harmful chemicals added!

That’s why I suggest only buying organic English or French lavender products. All those I sell in my Etsy store are English lavender products free from chemicals and pesticides.

Thanks for your input to the conversation Fran. Appreciated.

Best thing to do is get a skin specialist to tell you what it is; as a lot of skin conditions can be misdiagnosed as some present in a very similar way.

In fact on my new site I will be doing some articles on that topic, once I get the site up and running.

Many plants from nature has healing effects. That’s why I prefer to use natural path for treatment as well.

For ex. organic apple cider vinegar for indigestion, ginger to calm nausea etc.

Organic plants is always better as the non-organic one always contains pesticides or herbicides.

This is such interesting research Patricia. I always see so much conflicting information about which skincare products work and don’t work, how much to spend, etc. All of these complex chemical formulas touting miraculous results… I am allergic to several popular anti-bacterial skin products. I’ve tried tea tree oil, but I hasn’t been terribly effective for me. Perhaps organic lavender is a potential solution. Thanks for sharing!

Patricia@lavenderuses.com June 30, 2011 at 1:05 pm

Hi Marianne

I had a couple of reactions when I did the post about the lavandins cos some farms grow them and then have products made from them to sell!

I didn’t name any products, just what goes into them so it was still up to the readers to make their own choices. All I’m doing is writing information so people can make informed choices.

Like you, I have sensitive skin and so am very careful about what I put on my skin. So many products have harmful additives and often slick marketing ploys are used to convince people that their product is the answer … often it is not!

Hope you find what best suits you Marianne. I’m trialling lavender oil on a specific skin condition at the moment and hopefully it will be the answer for me.

I used to suffer from spots in my teens and early 20′s and they drove me potty. My children are now plaged by them and I know that it plays on there minds, just as it did mine.

So I need to find organic English lavender essential oil? Obviously that’s a specialist product, can you point me to a UK specialist at all?

Thanks Patricia, catch up again soon

If you want to purchase organic English lavender you could look at Amazon UK online and see if they have any. If you have trouble sourcing some, please let me know and I will look up other UK suppliers for you.

Just make sure it is organic and either English or French lavender so you know that it is free from chemicals and pesticides.

As I point out in this and other posts, lavandins have higher camphor content and can cause reactions; especially on sensitive skin.

Hope that helps. Have a great week Barry and thanks for stopping by.

Sounds like you have seasonal acne. With the change in the atmosphere; from summer to the autumn (fall) the humidity decreases.

The dry air can have an effect on sensitive skin. I have read that using a humidifying is sometimes helpful. And always consult your medical practitioner if you require treatment.

Lavenders for acne? Hmm, i really haven’t heard of this one before and i wonder if this is effective enough? However, i think that it’s not bad to try it. Besides, it’s a natural product so there’s nothing to lose.

Hi

I have always been advised that if using a product for the first time, best to apply it to a small area to see if there is any reaction; rather than apply it initially on the site that needs healing.

Most natural products should be tolerated by most people. However, we are all individuals, and so respond to different products in our own way.

An experienced aromatherapist can always advise, after examining your skin. Hope that helps.

This is really only an information site and I always encourage people to seek medical advice if needing treatment or diagnosis for any skin condition.

When you say, “Natural Health Products to the Fore” I wonder about the pharmaceutics industries now trying to sell health supplements. It reminds me of the Codex laws that are passing in Europe.

I just hope we can keep lavender from being controlled by the drug companies.

Hi Todd,

Welcome to my lavender blog. Thanks for staying to join the conversation.

Here in Australia I have seen some organic lavender products being sold in pharmacies, but on the whole they are sold through lavender farms or on-line so hopefully it will stay that way.

A lot of people who are into natural products are keen to stay away from pharmacopia, so I think for the moment they will source their products from those they know are also desiring to live a healthy organic lifestyle too.

My aim is to bring quality information for my readers to learn from and then at least they can then make informed choices when choosing products to buy :-)

Hi Patricia,

I LOVE Lavender…. I’ve tried many different variations of lavender product and fragrance and you’re right – you get what you pay for.

The absolute worst experience I ever had was with a dollar store lavender body spray. I tried some on, and it smelled like chemicals. The best part is a little got on my pants and actually stained them.

I’ve also gotten a chance to use real lavender essence that was freshly pressed. There is a HUGE difference in quality :)

Looking forward to more posts from you :)

Welcome to my small niche lavender blog. Good to meet another lavender lover :-)

When I began researching the different lavender species and lavender products, I was shocked by some of the chemicals in products that people thought were natural products!

And then there are the lavandin products that are high in camphor and so don’t smell like the lovely English and French lavenders!

Have done several posts on these topics and I know a lot of visitors to my site were surprised at the information but glad to be better informed.

This amazing aromatic herb has so many uses and if organic lavender products are chosen, as you so rightly say, you do note the difference.

Hi Jane

As with all products, as individuals we all respond differently.

The advice usually given by producters of any products to be applied to the skin; is that it is advisable to test on a small area before applying it as a treatment to an affected area.

With organic English lavender, I have not personally known of any adverse affects. With commercial products that are not organic, I have read of some nasty side-effects and I don’t use them.

Hope that helps. Thanks for stopping by and joining the conversation Jane.

Hi Celestine

As I researched the different lavender products, I realised that some were being sold that were not organic lavenders.

And if they are lavandins they will probably have a higher level of camphor which has been reported in some instances to cause burns on sensitive skin.

So it is always important to make sure that purchases are organic and true lavenders.

My experience is that lavender oil is great for clearing up existing spots, preventing new ones, and reducing the redness of spots. It also apparently has a rejuvenating effect on the skin which helps reduce acne scarring. The best thing about lavender oil is that compared to other acne treatments, my spots don’t flare up before they clear up. Half the problem with acne is just how red the spots are – if you can reduce the redness they are a lot less visible. And unlike other treatments, there has been no dryness or flakiness.

Reply

Patricia@lavenderuses.com October 28, 2011 at 10:40 am

Hi Anna

Thanks for stopping by and staying to join the conversation. Is organic English lavender your lavender of choice when you do use a lavender product?

If your skin is also dry, you may need to ask an experienced aromatherapist what to apply for the dryness. Some aromatherapists suggest carrier oils added to essential oils when applying to the skin.

As we are all individuals, products may react differently according to many factors such as whether you have dry skin, other underlying problems; so it is good to get qualified advice when needed.

Hope that helps Anna.

I’m SO happy to see this as I consult with people on how to build an online presence and if their idea is or needs to be niched down further, they express fear that there won’t be a big enough crowd for them to get in front of.

I’ll be using your site as an example from now on. I imagine there’s a lot any niche site internet marketer can learn from you.

Welcome to my small niche lavender blog. Thanks for the kind words.

It has been a complete surprise, all the loyal readers and frequent visitors to my site. I know there were a few people who expressed surprise in the early days that I would choose to blog about a single flower!

As you can see from the interaction and the great community involvement here, there are plenty of people who enjoy my posts. Hopefully they leave after reading each post; better informed about this amazing aromatic herb … the lovely lavender :-)

However, have not been blogging about the lovely lavender for the past few months; as I have been building another site and looking to expand into other areas of marketing.

Will get back to more input here after a few changes are made. Cos, despite all the comments and the community involvement, it hasn’t translated into a lot of sales.

So I had to take a serious look at learning more about effective marketing and also diversifying.

Will publish another post when the changes are made and then hopefully get back to regular posts again.

It has been a steep learning curve and I have met some amazing people along the way.

And learnt heaps too, so look forward to taking my blog, my other site (and more to come) and my business forward.

Thanks for the acne remedy. There are many products on the market today to treat acne – it’s not surprising that the all natural remedies work best. Keep up the good work.

Hi Ryan

This clinical trial must be very encouraging for people who have acne. I have another skin condition and only use organic products on my skin.

As we are all individuals, we have to find what works for us. And with organic products, no harmful chemicals and very few side-effects too.
