Lavender Tea

by Patricia · Lavender Health

The Clue’s in the Lavender Brew

When things get stressed or time just passes you by, I will be suggesting “go put the kettle on and we’ll have a brew”.

patricia21 Lavender TeaTo translate for our cousins across the pond in the USA and Canada.  I am suggesting that we sit down, relax and have a cup of tea.

That is seen as a panacea for all ills in this neck of the woods…or the part of suburbia where I live.

Coffee v Tea…no contest

Now although tea has been drunk for many centuries, I see a worrying trend. So many coffees to choose from.

When I left Australia and headed off overseas for what I thought was a working holiday (turned out to be serious work and for longer than expected) you could order a cup of coffee with or without milk.

Sure you could choose from different coffee beans.  Now there are so many ways you can drink it.

More choices makes no difference to me.   I so dislike the smell and even more the taste of coffee so just as well I was working in the UK and not in Europe eh?!

When I  holidayed in Europe the only way to get a good cup of tea was if I supplied the tea and made it myself.

Teashops, Cafeterias & Roadside Cafes

Not so in the UK where a good cup of tea was a different matter.  Quaint little teashops in picturesque villages throughout the regions I visited.  Roadside cafes and cafeterias in the shopping malls.

Wherever I ventured;  always a good cuppa to be had.  And now I have even more choices of the refreshing beverage to enjoy.

Another Great Find

When I was researching the many uses of the lovely lavender imagine my delight when I came across lavender tea.  Yay.

This was worth investigating.  Seems to be there are endless pleasures to be had from this amazing aromatic herb!  Sipping lavender tea is one of them.

Relax With Lavender Tea

Just as many of my regular readers were surprised when I informed them that they could cook with lavender; now a few may be surprised that they can sit and relax with a cup of lavender tea.

If you have returned home from the office stressed or girls if you are just having a “bad hair day”; don’t despair.  Here is a relaxing way to de-stress and enjoy a cup of lavender tea.  Please remember it needs to be organic lavender.

How To Make A Good Cup  of Lavender Tea

You will buy it packaged as lavender tea and here is how to make a good cuppa from one who should know.

  • Boil a kettle of water
  • In a warmed teapot add one teaspoon per person of lavender tea
  • Pour in the boiling water
  • Leave to brew for about 5 minutes
  • Pour into teacup using a tea strainer
  • Add honey or lemon to taste
  • Sit back and enjoy

If you have this shortly before going to bed; you should be relaxed and have a good night’s sleep.  Just make sure to strain the tea before pouring.  If you want it weaker, leave to brew for less time. Conversely stronger tea can be brewed for longer.

Lavender Tea’s Other Uses

And not only does it relieve stress and help with insomnia; it also can be used as a refreshing mouth wash.   Just make sure you cool the lavender tea before rinsing your mouth with it.  Don’t want to end up with a sweet smelling breath but also a burnt mouth!

Has also been suggested it can be effective in relieving stomach complaints and excess gas.  Medical research has shown that lavender does relax you and those of us who have tried it can tell you it works.  The proof is in the lovely lavender.

Purchasing Lavender Tea

When purchasing lavender tea please ensure the lavender tea is organic.  You may also like to try other herbal teas too; all with their own distinct flavour.

If you have any queries or questions, please contact me.  Thanks for stopping by.  Stay and join the conversation.  Love to hear from you, especially if you have tried these products for yourself.

Hi Patricia,

Glad you shared this info about Lavender Tea. I’m quite sure it tastes lovely. I can see myself drinking this with a zest of orange. :) I guess that pairs well.

Didn’t realize it could be used for a mouth wash. Always learning new things about Lavender.

Have a great day!

Patricia, you will kill me for this question, but I am the new generation :) Is there a way to make it from those little filter bags?

I love reading your lavender posts more and more, you totally hooked me! Great one…again!

Hi Brankica

I never mind answering questions on the lovely lavender. Just think of all those techie questions I ask you LOL

If by filter bags you mean the tea bags, then yes you can buy lavender tea bags or sachets, as they are called in some places.

Glad you are enjoying the lavender posts. I sure enjoy researching and writing them.

Hey Patricia,

I was here last night but too darn tired to leave a comment. Funny thing is afterwards I pulled out my last set of candle melts and guess what, yep they were lavender scented!

No need to tell you how awesome that was :) I have yet to try lavender tea. If it has the same impact as aroma therapy does then count me in!

One of my baking friends uses lavender flowers in bread, very nice!

Hope you have a great week!

Hi Kathy

Thanks for coming back to join the conversation. Lavender candles…ahh very relaxing. I wrote a post just before Christmas about soy candles. Was really surprised how popular the post was ;-)

I figure if people are learning something new about the lovely lavender then mission accomplished for me. And great that your friend is making lavender bread….yay.

When I did a post on lavender Devonshire teas that was another post that educated a lot of people. Slowly, it is happening. This amazing aromatic herb is getting the attention it deserves :-)

Let me know if you do try some of the lovely lavender tea and if it works for you. Thank Kathy for your input. Appreciated.

Hey Pat,

I confessed i am drinking coffee most of the time. Lavendar tea can refresh my mouth, i would love to try it.

My wife has been advising me to cut down on coffee. Think it’s a good time to try on lavender tea. I just browse on your etsy store but i think it’s not there. How do i get it?

Thanks for sharing another lavender thoughtful post Pat.

Hi Lye

Good on your wife for encouraging you to cut down on coffee. All types of tea are much better for you ;-)

With the lavender tea, you can buy from my Amazon store. Just click on the Lavender products in the tab at the top of the page.

You will see next to the products an Amazon button. If you click on that it will get you to the store. Type in lavender tea and voila there it is.

I am sorry it is not more straight forward. Got it set up for me so will have to sort something soon as getting more sales and don’t want to put people off.

Sorry my local supplier doesn’t do the tea. Will have to see where I can source in Oz as my etsy store so much easier to navigate from my site.

Thanks for stopping by and let me know if you have problems buying from my Amazon store Lye.

I have to admit I’ve never heard of lavender tea – what a nice surprise. I have some lavender buds in my cupboard I’ll have to give ‘er a try. Plus my breath is feeling kinda funky and I have dentist appointment tomorrow…

On a side note and an SEO tip, your line “How To Make A Good Cuppa” could be changed to a more specific “How to Make Lavender Tea” to grab those people searching how to make lavender tea. :)

Hey Patricia:

Wow, I love Earl Grey Tea. But thinking of lavender, it has to be very mildly brewed, then I can give it a try. I guess it can be easily used before sleep to relax easy too. My imagination is running wild. You are the expert on lavender and I am guessing.

Your product is so awesome that you can create a new promotional sales campaign every month. How often you do it? As i was reading some where that every day is a new sale day for a business owner.

The tea cup that you are shosing in the blog post is selected to have have lavender color flower on it, very artistic selection.

You are deeply involved in your business. I like your focus.

Did you ever think of making a signature perfume with additions of other fragrances for every one. Creating this signature fragrance must have a few hundred dollar fee. And then you supply the customized fragrance. This is a very artistic business, You add to your lavender products “all natural personalized signature fragrance.”

Promoted and planned with your kind of focus, this can make a lot of money. Just a suggestion. Someone I know used to do this working from home.

Nice post Patricia

Keep up the good work

Wow thanks for all those kind words and for some great ideas. Alas I have a very limited budget, but I can see where you are going with this.

My friend Brankica did the graphics for me and I asked for the colour scheme for the teacup if at all possible. She obliged and I really like the result :-)

I’m sure there is much more I could do but I am really just learning about marketing and the business side of things.

Will be having a good think about all your suggestions as some of them may even be do-able for me ;-)

Because I admire and respect you, Patricia, I must be honest …

For all the the tea in China (pardon the pun), I can’t imagine lavender tasting good. I love the aroma from a lavender-scented candle … it’s soothing and relaxing as a bath oil … and lavender-scented drawer liners are a must-have! But tea?

Can you describe the taste for us? Does it compare to another tea I may have enjoyed?

In no way am I doubting what you’re sharing about lavender tea. And you know lavender inside out and upside down! You’re the quintessential EXPERT. I just can’t wrap my brain around drinking it but I have a feeling you’re the one person on earth who can convince me to give it a try. :)

Hi Melanie

I did smile when I read your opening “For all the tea in China” LOL

This is not like the refreshing tea I was talking about that I enjoyed at those quaint tea shoppes in the UK.

This tea is to be sipped when having trouble to sleep! So I don’t actually need to drink it as I have no trouble sleeping. And lavender definitely has it’s own distinct flavour.

Adding honey will help and drinking it as a weak solution rather than letting it brew too long will help also.

I am waiting for some of my customers who have bought and tried it to get back to me to see how effective it has been. One of my readers is going to add orange zest to hers….to each their own I say ;-)

Thanks for stopping by Melanie. Always enjoy your input.

BTW, I’d really love to hear some stories sometime about your career as a midwife. I’ve been a childbirth educator and lactation specialist for three decades so it seems you and I know a lot about the “business of babies”. :)

Well done to you for your occasional cup of hot tea. So much better for you than coffee. So many people I speak to on the net can’t start their day or function without coffee!!!

Hi Sire

I was thinking I need to source it locally for my Aussie readers. Will do some research and get back to you.

The reason I set up my Amazon store was to give those who are overseas an option as some people think shipping from Oz too expensive.

Not everyone, as I have been selling my beautiful sourced local lavender products to people in New Zealand, USA and UK but I appreciate the cost of postage can be prohibitive for some.

Glad that you learn something every time you stop by. I do try and bring something informative to each post. That way I figure not only will people enjoy their visit, but they will leave being able to make informed choices about their purcahses.

Patricia, Your eloquent words took me back to England and made me homesick for their wonderful tea rooms. I have never tried lavender tea, but I will look for it. I am amazed at all of lavender’s wonderful benefits, I imagine lavender tea would be medicinal as well.

Have you ever been to the South of France while the lavender was in bloom? I never have, but would love to enjoy the sights and scents of that experience someday.

Reply

Patricia@lavenderuses.com April 10, 2011 at 8:11 am

HI Carolyn

The UK has the best tea rooms eh?! Lavender tea is really for helping you relax and sleep. With Earl Grey tea or English Breakfast tea, that is more what you willl be served in an olde worlde tea shoppe.

I have been to France but not while the lavender was in bloom. I visited Norfolk lavender farm in Norfolk, England when they were harvesting the lavender. Came back to my then home in Birmingham with some pots of pink, white and blue lavenders. Have written a post about it if you are interested in reading it.

As I was gardening on heavy clay soil, all and sundry were rather sceptical of my gardening expertise. However I built a small rockery and with free-draining sandy soil, my lovely lavenders blossomed and were my feature in my backyard garden.

Sadly, because of quarantine laws in Australia, had to leave them behind when I returned home. I sure hope the new owners were gardeners and took care of those lovely lavenders.

I’m about to start planning my small garden plot here and of course lavenders will feature. Will be writing about them in later posts.

Thanks for stopping by Carolyn. I’m now going to put the kettle on and have a cup of English tea ;-)

Patricia, aloha. Even though I am coffee drinker, especially since I live “close to the source” of the best coffee in the world, Kona coffee, I do enjoy a spot of tea each evening before I go to bed. It is, indeed, quite relaxing.

In addition to the properties of the lavender, Patricia, I think there is something about the ritual of preparing tea that is very soothing. When you are sharing it with friends, it seems you are preparing something a bit more special than just pouring them a cup of coffee.

To me, the container for the beverage–be it tea or coffee-makes a big difference. Over the years friends have given me any number of magnificent bone china cups and saucers. Drinking out of them is truly a pleasure.

Since you have long been a tea lover, Patricia, are you a collector of cups and saucers as well?

Tonight when I have my tea I will think of you and this wonderful post that will no doubt start many down the path of lavender tea. Well done, my friend. Aloha. Janet

Janet, you just brought back a special memory for me. When I was a little girl I used to enjoy my grandmother’s tea cup collection when we visited my grandparents’ home. She had collected tea cups from around the world when she was younger and had them proudly displayed in her dining room. I would always go into the dining room and admire her tea cups. When she passed, I inherited the tea cups. I have them in my attic now, I haven’t unboxed them since our move last summer. But tomorrow I will unbox her tea cups!

Thanks for reminding me of the importance of tea cups!

Reply

Patricia@lavender oil April 10, 2011 at 8:26 am

How wonderful to inherit those tea cups you so admired as a child. My Gran had a beautiful teaset that she used every day. Sadly most of the cups and saucers got broken over the years but as my Gran always said: “What’s the point in having nice things and not using them?!”

My Mother has a loverly teaset that she also brings out for morning tea with friends. And also a very fine bone china teaset that my Father brought back from a trip to Japan.

Great to hear you are now going to get yours out and hopefully use them for a relaxing cup of tea :-) Enjoy Carolyn. I’m just going to have a cuppa now myself.

Bone china cups and saucers….my Mother has some really pretty ones that she gets out when friends come for morning tea.

I actually don’t have a collection although I do have English Spode blue and white cups and saucers that I brought back home with me. I have actually got a collection also of coffee mugs which I use for large cups of tea ;-)

If people are suffering from insomnia, I hope they give lavender tea a try. Lavender has such great relaxing properties and it must be awful to not be able to sleep at night. Not something I have problems with.

Very interesting reading about this Patricia, I wasn’t aware of your stay in the UK. Otherwise you wouldn’t have so freely used the word “brew” ;-)

I used to love tea, and hate coffee. Now, I’m the other way round! I love the taste of coffee, yet for some reason, I now dislike the taste of tea. I’m not sure what’s happened, except it’s a natural part of me growing through life.

My family, and girlfriend, are largely tea-drinkers, so I’m in the minority, but I don’t care. I love a good cuppa, and that’s something I don’t intend to stop ;-)

Having tea is such a nice ritual. I have fond memories of watching my dad make and drink a cup of peppermint-oat straw tea.

But I have not tried Lavender tea. It actually sounds really good.

While I am waiting for the lavender to come up again. I will be picking up some from the health food store and give it a try.

Hi Janet

I will have to read this later and see what it has come up with. I know the research here means doctors are asking coffee drinkers to cut down to maximum 3 cups a day.

The latest research about different types of tea has discovered that black tea has more antioxidant properties than green tea…..however it is decreased if dairy milk is added! Interesting I thought and as I use soy milk in my tea seems like my cuppa is still very healthy.

Thanks for the information Janet. Always like to keep up to date. Now to go have a relaxing cup of tea to start off my day.

Hi Patricia, it’s good to know you didn’t pick up a brummy accent as your mother would cringe I think  (no disrespect to brummies but i know Patricia worked there for some time).

When it comes to Tea, my ear is finely tuned in to hear the kettle being switched on, and i like plenty of it, strong white without…….ummmm

When it comes to coffee, again i can hear the kettle switch at 100 meters ;) but i have 2 choices with coffee, white with one or black without, and even then I only have one or two in day. All of these new fandangled coffees are not for me. If i’m out and about and want a coffee I’ll ask for black filtered as i’m lost with all the new choices.

I do get stressed out and have sleepless nights so I will be adding Organic Lavender Tea to my shopping list this week. Hopefully i should be sleeping like a baby soon, how nice that would be :?: Destressed and sleeping……will my family recogonize me :?:

Thanks for another great post Patricia

Respect and Regards, Barry

Hi Barry

No I didn’t pick up the Brummie accent just some of their sayings LOL And although I thought after many years of living and working in the UK I would come home with a softer accent…alas I still have my broad Aussie accent as though I have never been away from home ;-)

Hope the lavender tea works for you. Add some honey or lemon to taste and you should have a relaxing night’s sleep.

Let me know how it goes for you Barry. Sure hope it helps you to de-stress and sleep. Thanks for your input and your continued support. Much appreciated.

Patricia, I love the Aussie accent! When I go my first GPS (or maybe you call them Sat Navs?), I tried all the voice options: male v. female and US v UK v Australian. I chose a female with an Aussie accent whom I named Claire after the character in Lost. Everytime she said, “Ready to navigate!”, she sounded so excited to accompany me on my journey. Claire always made my trip seem more fun!

Patricia@lavender oil April 12, 2011 at 11:33 pm

Oh Carolyn too funny :-) My accent is much broader than the rest of my family and I’m the one who spent years in the UK LOL

Everyone over there loved my accent but I think I got a bit self conscious cos when I would meet people they would always comment on it. Or ask me questions so they could listen to my accent!

Guess it was a novelty for them. And they wanted to know what all our sayings meant as some Aussie tv programs are shown in the UK and are popular.

I loved all the history in the UK and it was a joke amongst my British friends that if anyone wanted to know about a particular place or historical event, just ask me LOL Because they lived amongst it they didn’t seem as impressed as I was.

I didn’t know there was a lavender tea! I like an occasional hot tea, so I will have to look for that. I bet it smells delicious.

Hi Melinda

That’s part of the joy of researching and sharing about the many uses of the lovely lavender. Usually surprise a few of my regular readers ;-)

And it seems with some posts readers are going away better informed about the lovely lavender. Sweet.

I’m also pleasantly surprised that so many Americans actually drink tea :-) Thought you all only ever drank coffee.

Maybe some time I will have to share about the merits of different types of specialty teas…not just the lovely lavender :-) Start a revolution of some sort….oh no that”s already been done.

Started in Boston a few centuries ago I do believe but alas…..all that tea went to waste! I certainly couldn’t be doing with wasting any tea.

So please, keep enjoying your occasional cuppa and let me know if you do manage to source some lavender tea. Any difficulties there is some in my amazon store. Let me know how you find it Melinda.

Always good to have you stop by and join the conversation. And are those weeds cleared and the lavenders in yet?! ;-)

Hi Patricia,
At last I have time to talk with you. ;)
I did try lavender tea long time ago still remember its good smell. It’s great for relaxing time. But for busy time, coffee is the best. :)

Hi Rose

It seems like ages since we last spoke. Thanks for stopping by and taking time to comment. Lavender does have a beautiful perfume doesn’t it.

As for coffee, I don’t even like the smell! Coffee works so differently and I know some people say it is something they need to keep them awake when they are busy! Whereas tea is refreshing and relaxing so has the opposite effect.

I’ve been over and checked out your new site. Wow, you sure have been busy. All the best with your new venture Rose. Hope it works out well for you :-)

Hi Patricia! Well this is timely. I’ve just brewed a cup of tea as I visit a friend’s house to keep her delightful pets company while she is out of town. It’s wonderful to be out of my office and a perfect opportunity to visit some blogs on my laptop. As I did so, I realized the only thing missing was some tea as I relax!

My friend is a big tea drinker and I had a nice selection to choose from. Normally, I would be drinking a cup of java this morning. Although I love a cup of tea mid afternoon or early evening – tea does not keep me awake like coffee does. Perhaps my friend would enjoy a gift of lavender tea as a welcome home gift. What a wonderful suggestion!

Hi Theresa

What could be more relaxing than a cup of tea morning, afternoon or evening ;-) I love a cuppa any time of the day.

Tea doesn’t have the stinulant effect that coffee has. I notice some of my friends say they need a coffee to keep them awake! Yikes that speaks volumes to me.

Whereas tea has a relaxing effect and if its lavender tea it also helps with sleep. What a loverly gift that would be for your friend. Enjoy your cuppa and thanks for stopping by Theresa.

Hi Patricia,

First time visiting your blog! I’m a lavender junkie :) . It might be my favorite smell. I have lavender lotions, essential oils, scrubs, soaps, candles … I heart lavender. It started because of the smell but then I learned about the benefits of lavender and how therapeutic it is, I became a die hard fan.

In fact, I had a lavender latte yesterday at my local cafe shop. It’s a regular latte with dashes of lavender. Loved it.

So glad I stumbled on your blog!

Hi Janette

Welcome to my small niche lavender blog. Nice to meet another lavender lover. There definitely are heaps of lavender products to enjoy.

For me, since starting this blog I have been encouraged by the amount of medical research being done that confirms what has been known for thousands of years….lavender is effective in so many different circumstances and has heaps of uses :-)

If you have time, come visit again and have a look around at the other posts I have written about the many uses of the lovely lavender. You’ll probably enjoy the read.

Not heard of a lavender latte. I don’t drink coffee but sounds like you enjoyed it. For me there’s nothing more relaxing than a cup of tea.

Thanks for stopping by Janette and staying to join the conversation. Now I’ll be over to check out your blog.

How are you? Haven’t seen you for awhile. Thanks for stopping by.

You can actually buy it through my amazon store. Don’t have it in my Aussie local store yet. Hopefully the postage won’t be too much to Alaska. Didn’t know that’s where you were.

Hope all’s well and thanks again for joining the conversation here Linda. Appreciated.

Hi Steve

I was just replying to a comment on this older post and noted you had linked to this article from your blog.

Don’t know how I missed it as I was still very active on this blog then. Less so now as building a new site and want to get it up and running so blog hopping not in my plans for the moment.

I do apologise for missing this and not saying thanks for the link sooner.
