Lavender Treatment for Hair Loss

Lavender for Health and Well-Being

Lavender treatment for hair loss; specifically the condition Alopecia Areata has proved both interesting and encouraging.

essential oil comb and soap 199x300 Lavender Treatment for Hair Loss

Yet again lavender as well as other essential oils; is proving to be effective in health and well-being.

I hope you find this as exciting as I do. Read on for more on this interesting study.

What is Alopecia Areata

This is a particularly distressing condition where clumps of hair fall out resulting in pronounced hair loss; often following an autoimmune disease.

In other instances, the cause is unknown. It is a condition that both men and women can suffer from and is most distressing to the one who has it.

Another Lavender Uses Breakthrough

Although the results were published in 1990′s, I thought it was of interest to my readers to write about the study that took place and the subsequent results of that trial.

Medical Trial Conducted

This medical trial was conducted by Dr Isabelle C Hay a dermatologist at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.  With researchers from the Department of Dermatology they conducted a study on the effects of essential oils in people who had hair loss resulting from this condition.

Patients involved in Trial

86 patients were chosen and a double blind controlled study was undertaken.  Over a seven month period half of the group were active and were given the essential oil treatment and the control group used carrier oils jojoba and grape seed.

Assessments and Follow-ups

Follow-ups were done at three and seven months and photos taken to verify the results of the trial.

The other outcomes-based measures undertaken were  measurements of the severity of the alpoecia and mapping of the bald patches.

What Happened During the Trial

During the trial, patients were asked to massage the treatment onto their scalps for 2 minutes. They were also instructed to wrap their head in a warm towel to aid in absorption of the application. This was to be done daily.  Conversely, the control group used the carrier oil to carry out the procedure.

Results of Study

At the completion of the study, 19 of the 43 patients in the active group demonstrated significant improved hair growth while only six of the 41 patients in the control group showed slight improvement.

What was most encouraging was that one man who had been almost completely bald grew a full head of hair after using the essential oil treatment being trialled! This lavender treatment for hair loss had definitely worked for him.

Conclusion

From the results shown; Dr Hay and the research team involved in this trial concluded that not only are essential oils safe to use in the treatment of alopecia areata.  They also stimulate hair growth and in some instances there are remarkable results!

Important to Note

As with all treatments; we are all individuals and there will probably be varying degrees of success; just as there is with conservative medical treatments that are used in the treatment of hair loss.

You should not expect instant results.  Remember this trial was over 7 months – so be patient.

As with all health advice; please see your medical practitioner/qualified practitioner if you suffer from any medical condition that is contra-indicated in the use of any essential oils.

Also, be sure to check that you are only ever using organically certified essential oils whatever your use for them.

The essential oils used in the trial are as follows:

  • atlas cedarwood essential oil – 2 drops
  • thyme essential oil – 2 drops
  • rosemary essential oil – 3 drops
  • lavender essential oil – 3 drops
  • jojoba carrier oil – ½ teaspoon
  • grapeseed carrier oil – 4 teaspoons

Apply as follows:

Preferably choose a glass jar to mix your oils. Firstly mix the carrier oils, jojoba and grape seed. Add the essential oils one at a time and then place the lid on the jar. Shake the oils together to ensure they are mixed thoroughly.

Now they are ready for you to apply.  Gently massage into your scalp for 2 minutes daily.  And finally, here’s to your success.

Importance of Lavender Treatment for Hair Loss

It is becoming increasingly evident to me how important lavender essential oil is in the treatment of health conditions such as hair loss.

With these results, lavender treatment for hair loss certainly shows that it can be effective for some who suffer with this condition.

Your testimonial of an effective result with lavender would help spread the word that this aromatic herb is an effective essential oil to be used in health and well-being.

Hey Patricia,

Love your article. You show great enthusiasm in sharing about lavenders…Your blog posts show that you are really passionate about your topic..

Lets get to your first question…

Looks like you don’t have a backup to your blog yet. You need to have some backup plan so that you don’t lose your work.

Check out my article 2 simple ways to backup your WordPress blog to find out more on backing up your blog.

I recommend using Amazon s3 to backup your blog. This is the way I backup my blog. The good thing about this it is easy to set up and once set up you would never have to worry about backups ever again as it automatically backs up your blog in Amazon S3 clouds. Check How I use amazon s3 to backup my blog to know more about this plugin and how to use it…

Now about Dofollow; Open your WordPress dashboard, Click on the pages link on the left side of the dashboard which shows the pages you have. Click on about page…Scroll down the page until you reach the SEO part…Right after Keywords, there is are check boxes alongside noindex and nofollow attributes…Make sure these boxes are unchecked…If it is not checked as nofollow, it is automatically a dofollow….

Hope that answers your questions…If you have any problems, get in touch with me using the contact tab in my blog…

I also recommend you to use the headway Support forum to discuss any problems regarding headway theme.

Hello Patricia. See this is why you should have a separate contact page with comments enabled so that way others can post to that instead of here where it’s irrelevant to the topic you are discussing.
Lavender essential oil seems to be a more organic way of restoring hair loss as oppose to all these chemicals that are on the market now. Do you have an online provider where you obtain yours? It would be great for you to share that with your readers, especially if we are not sure how to go abut finding it or who has good quality oils.

Who ever would have thought that lavender could help with hair loss. My 21 year old son has thinning hair, so it’s not like its falling out in clumps or anything.

He doesn’t seem to fussed about it though, and I doubt he would let me rub it into his scalp or wrap his head in a towel, although it could be fun to try ;)

Patricia@lavenderuses.com September 9, 2010 at 5:58 pm

Hi Sire
There are different types of alopecia and it sounds like your son doesn’t have the one that was treated in this study. Some guys really get upset about it while others are not bothered.
Thanks for taking the time to visit and comment.

Hello Patricia,

I haven’t suffered from hair loss, but have added lavender, and other essential oils into products I create to aid in hair loss prevention.

My aunt was losing her hair, however, when she used a hair butter that I created for her, she started to regain her hair.

Not only can people who suffer from hair loss use it, those looking to increase their hair growth can use lavender also. Lavender stimulates hair growth, this has been scientifically proven. I’m referring to the book Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database.

Hair loss prevention/Hair growth products are effective as a spray too.

I have a hair spray I’ve made for my hair, although my hair has always grow fast, I noticed an increase when I started using that product. I’ve been using those sprays for at least fifteen years.

Hello Patricia,
Im really intrigued by your post on Lavender for thinning hair. I suffer from thinning hair from a long time medical condition that I surgery for several months ago. Now that I am recovering, it would be great to get my hair to growing the way it use to it still grows well but the growth is very slow and thin on top. would love to know more. I got certified as an herbalist several years ago but have not really studied alot on the essential oils.

Patricia@lavenderuses.com September 13, 2010 at 10:00 am

Hi Dee
Firstly thankyou for visiting my blog. The medical trial was specifically for alopecia areata which is a condition usually caused by an autoimmune disease although with some cases they do not know the cause. Yours sounds like a different cause so I couldn’t say for sure if this would work for you.
However in one of the comments one of the commenters has used lavender successfully so as it is a natural health solution as long as you are able to use it with no side effects it may be worth a try. I would be interested to hear how you go. Hope that helps.
Always make sure you only ever use organic essential oils. I am doing a post on that soon.

Hi Imran
Don’t have any solutions for grey hair. With your niece; it would be best for her to be seen by a medical specialist to find out why her hair is thinning. There are a lot of causes of alopecia (hair baldness) and it needs to be diagnosed by an expert. This medical trial was specifically for alopecia areata which is a type of hair loss usually related to autoimmune disease although some people suffer from it and they don’t know the cause. Hope they can help your niece as it is hard to suffer hair thinning so young. Thanks for visiting my blog and taking the time to comment.

For several years, I have seen lots of men are experiencing hair loss in their “baby boomer” age. It is common to our country (Philippines) now, and I don’t want to be like them. Men are forcing themselves to go bald or skin head because of hair loss. Lavender essential oil really helps us a lot to maintain our hair very strong to our scalp. No matter what shampoo do we use, there’s still a chance that we experience hair loss or fall, especially women. I think it’s time for me to look for any organic lavender essential oil available in the mall or drug store, even if I’m semi-bald right now. :)

In addition to lavender one of the best ways to enhance its effects is to eat a whole food plant based diet aka raw foods for a period of about 30 days. Actually I just posted some videos myself relating to the subject of raw food diets and stumbled upon this site.

Most problems such as hair loss can be cured without drugs or surgery as long as we stop falling victims to Big Pharma marketing scams…

I have a nursing background, but like you got tired of all the claims of the Pharma companies. So many side effects and often so little positive results.

Sadly, often people want to have quick fixes rather than alter their lifestyle.
