Why Choose Organic Lavender?

by Patricia · Lavender Products

Choosing Your Lavender Products

Why choose organic lavender? This question is often asked when purchasing lavender products. There are several answers to that question and hopefully it will be fully explained as we go along.

lavender wash oil dried 300x200 Why Choose Organic Lavender?

More and more people are becoming aware of the need to avoid products that are laden with pesticides

This is where organic products come into their own.

Lavender is no exception to this.

Whether it is lavender oil you are purchasing or you decide to make a lavender recipe using culinary lavender; make sure it is organic.

You don’t want to be using lavender that is a synthetic substitute; as it can contain harmful chemicals that you could ingest or inhale!

Check the Contents Label

Organic products should be clearly labelled organic and here in Australia there are stringent rules on what is or is not deemed organic.

The cost of organic products may be a little more as it takes years to be certified organic as the soil is tested regularly to ensure chemical and pesticide free soil.

In the US only products that contain 95% organic ingredients can be designated organic.  It is certified organic by the USDA according to the growing and production methods used.

Choosing Local Lavender Products

As for organic lavender products to recommend? I order locally sourced organic lavender products for my local customers.

The reason I have chosen lavender grown close to home; is to keep my carbon-footprint small.

Also I know the local growers will have passed stringent testing and that if they are certified organic it will be genuinely organic lavender.

Good News for Global Readers

For my global readers; you will not be left out.  I am researching quality organic lavender products for you too. Rest assured that the products I recommend are both certified organic and are not mixed with synthetic additives.

This has been a problem with some products in Europe and the US, but I am hopeful I may have found one.

Now, at last I have found a company I can do business with and recommend their products.  They are situated in the USA so thankyou to my regular readers who have been so patient.

I can assure you it should be worth the wait. There are lots of products to choose from.  If you click on the link in the right-hand column you can go have a look for yourself.

Ensuring Products Are Organic

With lavenders many uses; to ensure it is organic is so important.  If you are using it as an antiseptic you would not want to re-infect a wound with non-organic lavender now would you??!!

If you are relaxing in a bath with some lovely lavender added; if the lavender essential oil was not organic, your skin could easily react to the chemicals from the oils added to your bath.

And especially if you have sensitive skin or a skin condition like I have; ensuring your bath products are chemical-free is also important when choosing products.

This could cause long term skin problems and although these synthetic products are cheaper, isn’t your health and well-being worth more than that?

These are just a few of the reasons why organic lavender should be the lavender of choice when choosing your lavender products.  So much better for your health.

Precautionary Note

As with all products you use; please make sure they are not contra-indicated due to any medical condition you may have.  A qualified aromatherapist and/or medical practitioner can advise you on this.

I’ve got to support my US business owners, although some businesses aren’t certified “organic” they are, however, the “organic fees’ here in the USA can be extremely high and can be financially impractical for newer business owners to adhere too. ”

I’m definitely not, looking forward to the tax cuts to expire in 2011, if people would only read it they would realize that it doesn’t only the rich (although why the rich should be punished is beyond me) small business owners like myself, will get hammered too.

Reply

Patricia September 22, 2010 at 1:47 pm

That is not good. It is very different here in Australia. Small business owners are encouraged here with their business ventures.
If you know that they are organic and not got synthetic additives then that’s okay. My concern when doing my research was that I was finding so many instances of people thinking they were buying “safe” products to find out too late that there were non-organic substances added and this can cause all sorts of problems as you can appreciate.
BTW How would I know that products are organic without them being certified as such? I am keen to source quality products to review and recommend in the US as I keep getting asked when I will have products on my site to sell. Don’t want to rush into it but would appreciate your input on this one. If you prefer to email me; please do and thanks for your continued input into my blog. I really appreciate it.

Hi Patricia,
Interesting post!
You gave very good reasons why we should choose organic lavender or any essential oil/natural product for that matter. We never really know what we’re getting, but I believe when a product is organic, it gives me more of a sense of security and I am more likely to purchase it.

Take care,

Evelyn

While in the United States the USDA certifies organic products, some organic producers feel the standards are too lenient. Oregon Tilth is the most stringent certification organization here. If they certify a product as organic, you know it has been produced to the highest standards. Do they have private certification groups in Australia?

Reply

Patricia@lavenderuses.com September 23, 2010 at 10:51 am

Hi Stephanie
They do have different organic groups that certify and they all have different logos. I went to an interesting open day at an organic farm and it was all explained to me then. Very interesting and I sure do check labels more stringently now! So many of the big companies try to con people with their green labels. Just found an example of that for one of my readers who thought she was using organic products. When I researched for her it definitely is not organic as full of chemicals!!! I will need to check out all this for my American readers as want to only sell organic products on my site. Thanks for your continued support of my blog and the helpful information you always contribute to the posts.

Greetings All …
I … and some or many others may go even a step further …. raise my lavender ‘stockfree’ = in that there are no animal inputs in the fertilization process for the lavender. If you have any questions or want any information about the concept of ‘stockfree organic’ methods and/or processes just Google in the term stockfree and you will find all you will ever want to know. Also the book GROWING GREEN (Animal-Free Organic Techniques) by Jenny Hall and Iain Tolhurst is probably the best book on the concepts of ‘stockfree’ gardening and small-scale farming.

Hello Patricia,

I’m new here on your blog. I agree that organic lavender products are very safe to use because they are commonly known to be good in aromatherapy and can be used as an alternative medicine. And you’re right about researching about legitimate organic lavender products like the essential oil itself. I do really hate mosquitoes (I suffered dengue fever 8-9 years ago and almost died) and other insects in our home. It really annoyed me a lot, and we’re doing everything to avoid them. So for me the organic lovely lavender is truly worth to use and it helps maintain a very good healthy lifestyle. It’s better to buy the organic ones than anything that can be harmful to our health. Thanks for the wonderful information.

Patricia,

My post today is on organic certification in the United States and has some links you may find useful.
http://stephaniesuesansmith.com/organic-gardening-2/

Small farmers who make under $5000 from their farm but follow organic standards are allowed to claim their stuff as organic without paying for the certification, which is expensive. So you can look for small farmers who are claiming to be organic in answer to one of the comments here. Of course, since they were not actually certified or audited, you are taking their word for it.

Thanks for visiting my blog Jeff. Yes lavender definitely has many uses and if you ensure you only buy organic lavender products you should feel their benefit. Glad you enjoyed your visit here. Hi Michael
One method that I notice some people have mentioned will help with sinusitis is steam inhalation. Add few drops of lavender essential oil to boiling water in bowl. This hopefully should clear your sinuses. Sinusitis is usually caused by allergies or an infection that causes nasal passages to clog up and sinuses become blocked. The pressure build up is causing all the discomfort. Hope this helps. Let me know how you go. BTW make sure the lavender essential oil is organic as you don’t want to be inhaling chemicals into your system.

Great post! My father is currently retired and living on an acreage in the countryside in the states.

One of his new hobbies is growing lavender. The aroma is incredible at certain times during the year.

He hopes to make a few extra dollars off the crop each year, but has yet to figure out the best way. Any tips that do not involve a large time commitment? What sells well?

Hi
I live in Australia where with our Mediterranean climate it is so easy to grow lavenders. It depends what area he lives in. If you are in the US the areas are sorted into zones so it would depend which zone he lives in which lavender is most suitable. Is he going to grow to produce lavender essential oil or to sell the plants as dried flowers/bunches of fresh lavender? If he would like more information I can send you the websites where they are in fact monetizing their farming efforts in the US.

Hi
Hi Patricia,

Thanks for your response.

My father lives in the Midwestern United States. Lavender(along with almost everything else) appears to grow well there.

I know that he has experimented with extracting lavender’s essential oils. I think he had a little interest from local flower shops. He also explored selling the essential oils online for a small profit.

Unfortunately, there appears to be companies out there selling essential oils for next to nothing. I question the authenticity of the essential oils in these cases, but that’s a discussion for another time.

If you wouldn’t mind sending me the link you spoke about with regards to the folks you know whom are monetizing lavendar – I’d appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi cory
I will send you the information and I hope his little biz venture goes well. I think that spike lavender is the one a lot of Americans seem to be growing but if he has a Mediterranean climate then both English and French lavender should also grow well. You are spot on with the cheap imitations! I will be doing a post on that shortly.
If people are really concerned about their health they will want to source organic lavender and will pay what it is worth.

Very informative post Patricia. Here in Brazil, there is also a clear law that “organic” products not only should be labeled as such but also certified. While “organic” products are indeed more expensive, I find it worthwhile because it eventually “saves” me in just about everything in the long run. Chemicals are chemicals and for example for my kids, I will “run” to just about anything that are unhealthy. Better to start while they are young, right?

Lavender reminds me of my grandmother and her house where she always used to grow it in front of the porch. And she still does.

Yeah, as with most consumer products, it is best to choose the organic version where possible and affordable. It might sound a little “conspiracy theory” but I think manufacturers are in cahoots with government and the health insurance industry and pharmaceutical industry and they add chemicals and other toxins to the stuff we eat and use to make all of those groups richer. Ha! Am I paranoid?

Reply

Patricia@lavenderuses.com October 28, 2010 at 11:39 pm

Hi Susan
I’m not sure about your theory but I do know that there are greedy marketers out there who use hybrid lavenders to increase the volume of lavender so they can make more products which equal more profits! I just saw an advert from a well-known company advertising their lavandin products that would be good for the skin!!! My latest article deals with the dangers of lavandin products. Because they contain high levels of camphor they can burn the skin so I am disappointed that especially in the US they are allowed to do this.
